More details below under Other Testing Requirements

Freestyle 1 – Freestyle 6

  • HFSA Skaters testing the levels of FS1 – FS6 will test in Hutchinson by a panel of 3 judges.
  • 2 out of the 3 judges must pass the skater.
  • Only HFSA instructors can sign up a skater for testing.
  • A $35.00 non-refundable fee is required for each complete test.
  • Skaters will complete the compulsory portion (no music) of the test first. For the compulsory test, a judge will call out each element. The skater will then have 2 attempts to perform each element.
  • Upon receiving a passing score on the compulsory test, the skater will perform their program to music in the allotted time for that level. The skater will need to perform each element in their program with a passing score. (each element can be attempted up to 3 times).
  • If a skater completes all elements in their program with the exception of missing only one element, then that missed element may be attempted 2 times after the program ends. A coach will call out this element after the program.
  • A Skater must pass both the compulsory and program tests in order to pass the level.
  • If a skater passes the compulsory portion of the test but does not receive a passing score on their program, they do not need to retest the compulsory portion of the test for up to one year. They can then retest their program for a fee of $20 per test as long as their compulsory test completion is still in effect.

Freestyle 7

  • HFSA Skaters may test at an ISI competition or another club holding a test session with 3 certified gold instructors.

Freestyle 8 & Freestyle 9

Freestyle 10

Grading of Program

Definitions of Program Criteria

Posture Points

Posture Points should be awarded for elegance of style incorporating upright carriage with graceful head and arm movements and extended free leg positions.

Extra Content

The program must contain all required elements of the test taken and may incorporate any extra maneuver of a lower test and any uncaptured moves.

Correctness

Technical accuracy of the maneuvers performed.

Pattern Overall

Plan and sequence of the maneuvers performed. Examples of pattern are: circles (clockwise and couter-clockwise), eights (clockwise and counter -clockwise), straight lines, diagonals, spirals, and serpentines. Depending on the length of the program, incorporate as many of these patterns as possible. Balancing the performed maneuvers at different parts of the rink and using the entire space available is part of the program planning. The longer the duration of the Freestyle test program, the more varienty it must offer in pattern design. A low Freestyle test program which utilizes the entire space available certainly deserves a higher grade than a high Freestyle test program which utilizes the same space available.

Rhythm Coordination between movement and music; smoothness of transition from one maneuver to another.

Duration

As specified for the particular test being taken. Freestyle tests 1-10 permit a leeway of 10 seconds over the prescribed time. If the skater skates 11-14 seconds over the prescribed time, s/he will be given the grade of 8; if the skater skates 15 seconds or beyond, s/he will be given the grade of 5. Judging stops at 10 seconds over the prescribed time. There is no penalty for skating under the prescribed time. Timing for the program portion of the test begins with any action after the music starts.

Interpretation Projection by expression of change of pace and mood of music.

Artistry

Style and creativity.

Other Testing Requirements

  1. The examiner shall grade each program item on a scale of 0 to 10.

  2.  For a passing score on the program, the skater must achieve at least the minimum passing grade of 5 on each item.

  3. With regard to content, if a skater adds uncaptured moves, s/he should be given extra credit. If the skater fails to perform these added maneuvers acceptably, this fact should be taken into consideration and the skater should be penalized.

  4. Technique or method employed to perform a maneuver shall not be a determining factor in passing or failing the test.

  5. If the skater fails to perform any of the compulsory maneuvers during the program, either by omission or by unacceptable performance, then the test shall be considered incomplete, and the entire program must be taken again, with the time between the tests left to the examiner’s discretion. The skater is limited to three attempts per required maneuver during his/her program, and as always, the better attempt will be judged. If the skater attempts the maneuver a fourth time, it will not be judged.

  6. If an individual skater is taking three or more Freestyle test the same day, it is acceptable for the skater to perform a program that includes all the required maneuvers for that test without music and receive a grade of 5.0 for rhythm, extra content and duration. However, the highest test attempted in the series of test must include a complete choreographed routine skated to music as usual.

  7. The dance step sequence requirements in Freestyle Tests 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 have mandatory patterns and may be performed in either direction for ISI testing and ISI competitions.
