Soloist Qualifications

  • Achieving a soloist position in the annual March ice show is a privilege and an honor. 
  • There is a maximum of eight soloists in one show. 
  • A soloist position will be awarded to those skaters who receive the most points in a season. 
  • Effective for the 2023 skating show, any skater that has passed Freestyle 5 and is not in the top 8 positions in the point system and has met all the soloist qualifications will be awarded a feature(shorter solo, duet or trio) decided by coaches discretion. 
  • Points will be accumulated on an annual basis from December 1 – November 30.

The Five Minimum Requirements for Soloist Spots

The below requirements must be met by all HFSA soloists each year, including the ice show of their graduating year. If a qualifying soloist fails to meet these requirements, HFSA reserves the right to withdraw the opportunity to hold a soloist position in the next annual ice show. Disqualification from a soloist position may occur even if after the soloist cutoff date.


  1. HFSA members for the entire fall/winter season.​
  2. Contract for a minimum of three (3) fall/winter Hutchinson ice sessions. Includes: Group Lessons, Private Ice, and PRCE Ice.
  3. Be active and engaged skating members of HFSA, which means they skate their weekly ice times. (HFSA Coaches discretion.)
  4. Achieved the level of Freestyle 5, meaning they have passed this level.
  5. Participate in two (2) HFSA attended ISI/USFSA competitions and one (1) HFSA solo exhibition, or participate in three (3) HFSA attended ISI/USFSA competitions.


​After the five minimum requirements are met, points will be accumulated as follows: 


​1. LAST LEVEL PASSED - Skaters will be awarded points based on the last level they have passed. No points are awarded in the event of a half-pass; in the event of passing only the compulsory portion of the test, you haveone year to complete the program portion of the test and pass before the compulsory portion expires. Skaters must pass both the compulsory and program to receive the points per level.


  • FS1= 5 points
  • FS2= 10 points
  • FS3= 15 points
  • FS4= 30 points
  • ​FS5= 50 points
  • FS6= 65 points
  • FS7= 80 points
  • FS8= Automatic solo
  • FS9= Automatic solo
  • FS10= Automatic solo


2. EXHIBITION Participation 

A skater will be awarded five points for participation in the Holiday on Ice or Winter or Summer Exhibition. There can only be five points maximum earned per year.


3. COMPETITION POINTS - ISI or USFSA

Effective for the 2022/2023 skating show, there will be a maximum of six total points in HFSA attended competition points (Including Worlds when applicable).

  • For the first event, one point will be awarded; additional events at HFSA attended competitions will each count as one point with a maximum of three points awarded per HFSA attended competition.  -Points can come from all 3 HFSA attended competitions in a skating season, with a maximum of up to 6 points. 
  • Summer competitions will not count toward soloist points with one exception.  In the event of ISI Worlds being hosted in Minnesota, points will be awarded. 
  • Skaters may attend more than 3 competitions, but points will only be totaled from three competitions.
  • Testing for Freestyle 8 and above at HFSA attended competitions will be awarded two points. A maximum of three points total will be awarded per HFSA attended competition combining/including both competing and testing events.

*Note 2021/2022 skating show will not require competitions points due to COVID-19


4. CONTRACTED ICE - Hutchinson Ice Only

One point per session for fall/winter HFSA ice time and 1 point maximum for PRCE practice ice, with a maximum of four points awarded for the fall/winter season.

One-half point per HFSA session for summer ice, with a maximum of 2 points awarded per summer.


5. YEARS SKATING AS AN HFSA MEMBER 

Starting with the 2000/2001 season, each skater who was an HFSA member for the entire season, received one point. Each year as an HFSA skating member, the skater will earn an additional point. This is the only cumulative point from year to year.

​If a skater leaves HFSA for a season and/or has poor participation and engagement in HFSA skating, that year’s point will not count. The rink attendance binder and HFSA Coaches discretion will decide this point at the end of each skating season.


6. IN THE EVENT OF A TIE:

The solo will be awarded to the skater at the highest ISI level

If the skaters are at the same ISI level, the solo will be awarded to the oldest skater.


7. SHOW SOLOIST POSITIONS

Soloist points will not determine the position where the soloist skates in the annual skating show. Show positions will be determined by the HFSA Coaches.
